Green office week is back

Green office week May the 14th -18th 2012.

This year (2012) it's being held between the 14th and 18th of May.   As you may remember from previous years this is a nationwide scheme aimed at helping both businesses and individuals to improve their "green credentials".  It important for all of us to play our part in being as environmentally friendly as we can and the office supplies supermarket fully support this initiative.  Click the link to find a full list of Avery office products range for 1012.

For the third year running the initiate to improve our working environments is being sponsored by Avery. The aim of the initiative is to get employers and staff to make a positive change for the good of the environment. Each day of the week has been designed to focus on a different “green” issue.

Monday – act on energy. Offices are big consumers of electricity – replacing just one traditional filament based light bulb with and energy saving alternative could save £2.50. Multiply that by the number of bulbs in a standard office and there is a huge saving to be made for those who have not already changed over.

Tuesday – act on transport. Public transport, biking or walking to work all have a lower carbon footprint than driving in.  Green office week is the perfect time to start making a difference. For those who have to drive into work the focus will be on car sharing. For many offices car sharing is a real possibility and the gains made from it are not just environmental. By halving fuel costs employees who drive in to work together will be better off....and it’s a good chance to have a gossip!

Wednesday – act on waste. Emphasis is placed on the three R’s – Recycle-reuse-reduce. For larger companies this initiative could prove to be a real money spinner. For example, if your company or business produces a large amount of waste paper you may want to look into having people pay you to recycle it.

Thursday – act on purchasing. In business the bottom line is always important and ensuring that office supplies are bought for the best possible price should be top of everyone’s agenda. By shopping around products can be found that are both well priced and kinder to the environment.

Friday – act on opportunity. Share that Friday feeling with your colleagues by discussing the savings you have made throughout the 5 days of green office week. Who saved more? What can you do in the future? How can the momentum be kept going?

Update: 14th april 2011

Those of you that have been following the official green office week website will know that Wednesday’s are for acting on waste.   The Supermarketonline are ahead of the curve.  We now have numerous (huge) recycling bins installed in our offices.  Each bin is labelled with it’s expected contents and the system is working.   This is one of those times when we have all taken a step back and wondered – why were we not doing this before....It’s so easy!

Suppliers support the initiative

Many suppliers of our suppliers are starting to get into the green office week spirit. BIC and teracycle (recycling company) have created a scheme which allows for voluntary collection of used pens from workplaces and educational institutions.  For each pen collected 2 cents are donated to charity, In the case of schools the money goes straight back to them to help fund educational projects.  The scheme sponsored by BIC allows for recycling of all pens not just BIC branded ones.  The pens are remade into new products including pen holders, waste paper bins and watering cans by teracycle.

Office supplies supermarket in the dark.

In support – and well in advance of green week the office supplies supermarket has been improving our environmental credentials by sitting in the dark.  Our main offices in Leeds have very good lighting though out the year and now that the daya have started to brighten up a move have been made to reduce our carbon footprint by not using the lights. (so apologies for any spelling mistakes as I can’t see my screen!).  Staff are also being encouraged to monitor their own power usage, we have now nominated a person to switch off every day!  Each day one person from our rota ensures that monitors, printers and pc’s are shut down at night.

We have made the move to act more energy efficiently voluntarily; however Businesses are coming under increasing environmental pressure.  We have seen an upturn in the number of people buying “Green” office machines.  The main standard used in Europe to determine an machines energy efficiency is the “energy star rating”.
Printers spend a very low percentage of their time actually printing, but leaving them on all day uses up a lot of energy.  Systems such as deep sleep mode help to reduce the damage these machines do to the environment.
